The Passion Of Christ<\/span><\/i><\/b>

<\/span><\/i>Wearying are all these depictions
\nOf the suffering of our Lord
\nWhose dying and death
\nAre “performed” in so many plays,
\nCantatas and now by one big film.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this is so tiring to my senses
\nAnd sensibilities-
\nThese “performances” miss the point.
\nThat is, that Jesus is being oppressed,
\nTortured and murdered every single day
\nIn the lives of millions upon millions
\nOf the naked, sick, the hungry and thirsty
\nOf our world.<\/p>\n

Did he not tell us ever so plainly
\nThat he was embodied in all those
\nWho suffer in our time.
\nWhile the Church has “performed” its
\nRitual of remembrance of the ‘Passion of Christ’
\nThroughout her history,
\nInnumerable souls have tasted real torture
\nAnd very real death.<\/p>\n

Have we in the Church, perhaps, been more concerned
\nWith our dramatic “performance”
\nThan with the plight of those
\nWhom Jesus said he was to be?<\/p>\n

Oberammergau’s power of performance
\nContinued to flourish during the Nazi regime,
\nWhen Jews were being dragged away
\nBy the millions to death camps.<\/p>\n

Let us weep for Jesus, yes,
\nBut let us also weep for those
\nWho are being crucified this very day.
