Trull<\/p>\n<p>First-born she was from a clan of twelve,<br \/>\nemerging from a Bowl of Dust<br \/>\non rural Indian plains<br \/>\nonce trod by proud nations now dispersed.<\/p>\n<p>Second-mother she was to the<br \/>\nbrood of chicks her mother bore.<br \/>\nYet from that furrowed farm she gazed beyond<br \/>\nthe fields of grain toward a better land.<\/p>\n<p>And in that fearsome world of lights and sounds,<br \/>\na world where milk-maids seldom trod,<br \/>\nshe built a life,<br \/>\nand met a man,<br \/>\nand soon her own first-born was cradled in her arms.<\/p>\n<p>While singing lullabies to her child<br \/>\nshe promised him a better life-<br \/>\nhe too would find a better land.<\/p>\n<p>Yet strange to her this first-born child<br \/>\nclaimed to hear another voice-<br \/>\nclaimed to see another city distant in the skies.<\/p>\n<p>And so in time he left her land on a quest<br \/>\nto find a place for him long-planned<br \/>\nby distant urges she had scarcely felt.<\/p>\n<p>Oh me,&quot; she cried<br \/>\nas she watched him go,<br \/>\nwondering if this Don Quixote knew his way.<\/p>\n<p>He was sure; she was not!<\/p>\n<p>Three decades now have passed.<br \/>\nOn her back she lies-<br \/>\nA place she always dreaded.<br \/>\nTotally dependent on others-<br \/>\nto feed her<br \/>\nbathe her<br \/>\ntend her every need.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Oh me&quot; she uttered with her eyes,<br \/>\nwords her numb lips could not frame.<\/p>\n<p>Her first-born came to tend her needs-<br \/>\nthe end was near.<br \/>\nHe held the dropper to her lips,<br \/>\nWhat little liquid she could take<br \/>\nwas measured in centimeters.<\/p>\n<p>Almost choking,<br \/>\nagain she looked into her first-born`s eyes<br \/>\nand without words she spoke<br \/>\nher common commentary,<br \/>\n&quot;Oh me,&quot;<\/p>\n<p>He saw it,<br \/>\nthis so wise preacher-son of hers<br \/>\nwho wondered in his weaker moments<br \/>\nwhy the God he worshipped<br \/>\nwould not stop the pain-hers or his.<\/p>\n<p>He knew her thoughts<br \/>\nand shared her sense of helplessness.<br \/>\nAs he bent down to turn her body,<br \/>\nshe shook her head in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>This Pioneer woman who always had control,<br \/>\nWho shared the burden of her mother`s load,<br \/>\nWho stood so strong and tall beside her husband`s bed,<br \/>\nWho reared her three through desperate times.<\/p>\n<p>She would allow no such dependency!<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Mother,&quot; he said,<br \/>\nfor nine long months you carried me<br \/>\ninside your womb,<br \/>\nand for years beyond my birth<br \/>\nyou held me in your arms.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>This first-born by her bed continued,<br \/>\n&quot;So let me now carry you,<br \/>\nlift and turn you in your bed<br \/>\nto ease the pain.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Just for a moment<br \/>\nher eyes agreed<br \/>\nas her lips pursed again those words,<br \/>\n&quot;Oh me.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The body once strong and straight<br \/>\nnow lean and limp<br \/>\nwas oh so hard to grasp,<br \/>\nand harder still to turn to ease the pain.<\/p>\n<p>He lost his grip-<br \/>\nthe sagging flesh fell back to bed.<br \/>\n&quot;Damn&quot; he uttered<br \/>\nunder his breath.<\/p>\n<p>She also heard<br \/>\nthis expletive her ears could not believe<br \/>\nfrom this the preacher`s lips.<\/p>\n<p>She laughed!<br \/>\nNot audibly, but obviously-<br \/>\nWith her eyes,<br \/>\nHer face,<br \/>\nAnd with that twisted smile.<\/p>\n<p>She laughed!<br \/>\nAnd he did too.<br \/>\nTogether they shared a final smile<br \/>\nthat to this day<br \/>\nbrings joy and solace to a first-born`s heart.<\/p>\n<p>A stronger arm soon lifted her<br \/>\nand did not let her go.<br \/>\nBeyond the bed,<br \/>\nbeyond the antiseptic halls,<br \/>\nbeyond the pain and failing flesh,<br \/>\nbeyond the springtime thunderheads<br \/>\nrushing toward Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Nevermore would she need to say,<br \/>\n&quot;Oh me.&quot;<br \/>\nFor now she smiles and laughs<br \/>\nwith others who have learned<br \/>\nwith her<br \/>\nthat dependency can be liberating.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From A First-Born: A Mother`s Day Tribute Joe E.
