We are saddened to share the passing of Dr. Joe E. Trull on November 2, 2025, in Clover, South Carolina. Joe was a beloved professor of Christian ethics, a dedicated pastor for over twenty years, and a guiding voice in moral formation for church leaders. His legacy includes a profound impact on theological education and ethical ministry, most notably through his years as editor of Christian Ethics Today.
Joe authored several influential books, including Ministerial Ethics: Moral Formation for Church Leaders, Ethics for Christian Ministry, and Walking in the Way: An Introduction to Christian Ethics. His work shaped generations of ministers and leaders, emphasizing integrity, compassion, and courageous discipleship.
Beyond his academic and editorial contributions, Joe was known for his winsome personality, good humor, and unwavering commitment to following Jesus. He was also a gifted athlete in his youth, playing football for Baylor University. Joe and his late wife, Audra, were a remarkable team in ministry and life. In recent years, he shared life with Mary Rickenbaker, a long-time friend of both Joe and Audra.
Joe’s three adult children are currently making arrangements to honor his life and legacy. We give thanks for Joe’s faithful witness and the many lives he touched through his teaching, writing, and leadership.
